September 2026

Out to sea, again! Jackie, Ava, and Dr. McMonigal are joining the Northern Bering Sea Integrated Ecosystem Research Program cruise. Medea is joining the Northern Gulf of Alaska Fall LTER cruise.

August 2026

Khrista and Dr. McMonigal spent a week in Utqiagvik teaching K-12 students about oceanography and sampling for harmful algal blooms on the UIC Science boat, Doctor Island.

May 2026

Kylie, Khrista, and Medea joined the Northern Gulf of Alaska Spring LTER cruise. They each took different roles, from running chlorophylls to operating the CTD to deploying nets.

April 2026

Khrista was awarded the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship! She is one of five UAF students to recieve the fellowship this year. You can read more about Khrista and the other UAF awardees in a UAF news article. Congrats!!!

Jackie, Ava, and Kylie presented posters at the Alaska Marine Science Symposium in Anchorage. Great job team!

New students Kylie and Khrista moved to Fairbanks. We are excited to welcome them to UAF!

July 2025

Dr. McMonigal co led the ACTION Convergence Cruise onboard the R/V Sikuliaq! This successful cruise included knowledge exchange with Alaska coastal community members, bathymetric mapping, wave buoy and mooring deployments, sediment coring, and more! Jackie assisted with wave buoy set up from shore. Check out media coverage here.

Jackie Beight and Dr. McMonigal attended the ACTION project retreat at Chena Hot Springs. We met many project partners and had a fun week.

January 2025

Jackie Beight and Dr. McMonigal presented at the Alaska Marine Science Symposium in Anchorage, AK. Ava Meier joined to learn more about oceanography in the Gulf of Alaska.

Eight students joined an open CTD workshop at UAF! We built 3 low cost CTD sensors and conducted test deployments of two of them in the Chena River

M.S. student Ava Meier arrived in Fairbanks after a long, adventure filled journey!

Dr. McMonigal returned from a successful research cruise aboard GO-SHIP I05S! This was the fourth time that the South Indian Ocean has been sampled over its full depth at 30 nm spacing.
